Frequently Asked Questions
Latinx Research Week Frequently Asked Questions
What is Latinx Research Week?
Latinx Research Week is a conference that celebrates the scholarship of Latinx students, researchers, and faculty at U-M, and uplifts research relevant to Latinx communities. LRW is unique in that it brings us together in community despite our disciplinary boundaries, showing that although our areas of study are traditionally siloed, cuando estamos juntos (when we are together) and we utilize our multidisciplinary connections, our impact as a collective whole flourishes on campus and beyond.
What does ‘Floreciendo Juntos’ mean?
Floreciendo Juntos, meaning Flourishing Together. We chose this theme to highlight how Latinx students, staff, and faculty from around campus are contributing to excellence in research across disciplines. This year, here at the University of Michigan, we are eager to display how we Latinx Scholars estamos Floreceindo Juntos.
How do I register to attend LRW Sessions?
You can register for all of our sessions here.
Will food be provided?
Yes! We will have food at all of our sessions. All evening events will have dinner for attendees. Most of our meals highlight Latin American cuisine. If you have dietary restrictions please list them when registering so they can be accommodated.
Is there a cost of attendance?
No! Attendance is completely free and there will be refreshments and light snacks for attendees!
Do I need to be Latinx to attend?
No - although the goal of LRW is to highlight work produced by Latinx scholars and/or about Latinx populations, LRW aims to create a space to celebrate the scholarship of faculty and students at large. Therefore, we welcome all interested individuals to engage with our academic community during LRW.
I want to volunteer. How can I help?
We would love to have you. Please fill out this brief form by Friday, March 3rd. A mandatory volunteer training will be hosted Monday, March 6th. All volunteers will be given a meal and a Puentes t-shirt as a thank you for your time.
Are there any prizes for winners?
Yes! Monetary awards will be provided for students who opted into judging and are selected for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. Each student will be evaluated by a minimum of two faculty or alumni judges.
The awards for graduate students are as follows: 1st place award is $100, 2nd place is $75, and 3rd is $50. The award for undergraduate presenters is $100.
How are presentations being evaluated?
Our judging rubric takes into consideration the interdisciplinary work being presented, with categories for visual, oral, content, and impact. This rubric will be uploaded to our site the week before LRW for transparency.
Will my abstract be published?
Yes! Abstracts submitted will be published in an abstract booklet with a digital object identifier (DOI) to provide CV-boosting reference (with the option to not publish in case your work is time/copyright limited).
Who can present?,-
Presentations are welcome from faculty, post-docs, graduates and undergrads. We welcome participants to present on all levels of research.
I have a poster to present, but no means to print it - can I still present?
Of course! If you need funds for printing please email us at puentes.admin@umich.edu for assistance–we will be able to cover printing costs for those who need it. Please make sure you email us a PDF version of your poster by Wednesday, March 8th at 5 PM to ensure enough time for printing and make the subject line of your email “LRW POSTER PRINTING”. (Keep in mind that any images and graphs in your poster should be TIF, PNG, or EPS file format and minimum of 150 ppi (pixels per inch) to avoid pixelated appearance. Also, if a margin is desired, include it in your poster design.)
I didn’t RSVP, but can I still attend?
Yes, all of our sessions are open to the public!
Can I invite friends or family?
Of course! We would love for you to bring any guests to attend LRW sessions. The more the merrier. Please be sure to note any additional guests when registering to attend.
I cannot be there in-person. Can I watch the sessions virtually?
Yes! All of our sessions, with the exception of the poster session, will be livestreamed for remote viewing. You must register to attend in order to view the live streaming information for each session.
Can I bring children to the LRW events?
Yes, children are welcome to attend. If you are presenting, volunteers will be onsite to watch your chid(ren) during the session. Children will remain in the same room as the parent at all times and cannot be dropped off at LRW programming. Parents will be asked to sign a waiver upon arrival agreeing to these terms.
